From the Spring 2002 Water Conservation News:
Leak detection is a necessary and vital component to water distribution systems
worldwide. Accurate determination of the position of leaking water pipes within
a supply system and subsequent repair serves to save revenue and conserve water
as well as energy. Water that is lost after treatment and pressurization, but
before delivery to customers, is money and energy wasted.
The methodology for conducting a leak detection survey involves a primary survey
and a secondary survey. The primary survey investigates a predetermined section
of the distribution system. The secondary survey pinpoints or discounts
potential leakage spots identified during the primary survey. This is a very
time consuming process because the survey team must make sure to systematically
check every line of the supply system.
New technology is currently being produced to automate the primary portion of a
leak detection survey. This technology includes a single unit comprising audible
leak detection hardware coupled with a data logger, radio transmitter and
extended life battery (10+ years). Multiple units are permanently installed at
multiple pipe locations within the water supply system and continually monitor
for sounds characteristic to pipe leakage. When a unit detects an audible
reverberation indicative of leakage, the onboard radio transmitter sends a
signal to an above ground receiver. The survey team now has only to drive about
the survey area with the receiver to identify locations in which to return with
a noise correlator for pinpointing or discounting potential leakage spots. This
automated technology significantly reduces the amount of time required to
conduct the primary survey. Rather than manually connecting the audio receivers
to the pipes, a survey team, using this technology can simply drive about with a
data receiver and record the data being transmitted from the data loggers. And,
although not yet available, the incorporation of telemetry to permanently
installed data loggers could eliminated the initial portion of the leak
detection survey altogether.
The primary drawback to such a system is that large quantities of data loggers
are necessary to accommodate a large water system. For example, Severn Trent
Water reported that 173 units were necessary to properly accommodate a supply
system of 2,125 properties. However, they also reported cutting their leakage
rate by one half in five years. Savings of this magnitude may warrant such an
investment.

Thermal Imaging
Scope of Work: Leak detection technology and equipment
will be investigated using a combination of approaches including:
- Surveys - Surveys will be conducted on currently
utilized technology both in the U.S.A.
to insure that all currently used Leak detection techniques
will be evaluated.
- Analyses - Available models and software will be
used to evaluate the effectiveness of the various Leak
detection methods that are identified. We have
considerable in-house software including commercially
available steady-state multiphase flow models, equation of
the state models and mechanistic multiphase flow models that
have been developed as a result of previous Leak detection
research.

About Leak Detectors
Leak detectors are used to pinpoint the source of a Leak. Gas and vapor Leaks
are common in virtually any industry. In fact, it is a simple truth that
anything that uses gas will Leak. The concerning factor, however, is how fast
the Leak occurs, whether it be a small amount by the second or every thousand
years. When the amount that is Leaking becomes a potential danger for the
equipment or the health of the employees, Leak detectors are used to determine
the amount and the composition of the gas being Leaked. When this is done, a
corresponding action is taken to deal with the Leak accordingly.
Leaks can be found via electronic, chemical and sound-sensitive technologies.
Most Leak detectors are hand-held devices that are programmed to monitor
specific conditions. The mobility of the Leak detectors is important because of
the tight and complex networks of piping that are sometimes used to house a gas
or a liquid. Most methods of Leak detection are operator dependant. Some
systems, however, such as those used to detect water Leaks, are able to monitor
changes in atmospheric conditions without the use of an operator. Different
types of Leak detectors are used for specific duties, such as the actual gas
detection at the spot of the Leak, the amount that is coming out and the type of
gas. Sometimes a tracer gas like helium is used to help aid in the detection of
other gases.
Leak detection and prevention is a crucial part of the industrial sector. Many
different industries have problems with Leaks, and thus need reliable and
accurate Leak detectors to fix their problems. In the medical industry, Leaks
can be found in pumps, containers, fluid transfer devices and other instruments
that may play a crucial role in the lives of patients. Other industries, such as
the scientific and automotive, use Leak detectors on measuring equipment,
water pumps, cylinder heads, calibrated volume vessels and hydraulic components.
Having problems with Leaks can not only cause a system to malfunction, but could
also be hazardous to health, depending on what chemical or gas is being dealt
with. Because of this, Leak detectors play an important role in many fields
today.
Unfixed Leaks are a major source of economic loss in both the residential and
industrial spheres of society. Leaking liquids and gases can damage surrounding
equipment. Unchecked and un-repaired Leaks are a major health concern for people
who inhabit a factory, work or home environment. Certain gasses and other
chemicals can have serious consequences to individual health from even short
term exposure. Water Leaks left unchecked create mold and therefore manifest
many allergic responses in employees or customers exposed. The refrigeration
industry is very concerned with the efficient and quality detection of Leaks, as
many of the chemicals, such as the now outlawed CFC (chloroflourocarbon), can be
found in many older refrigeration units still in use.
